Premiering BATTLEGROUND at ADF
October 11, 2024 — Durham, NC
We will premiere our newest creation Battleground at the American Dance Festival this coming fall.
In this genre-defying work, Movers literally plows through 10 inches of freshly tilled soil to examine the concept, energies, and consequences of the incessant armed conflicts that the United States has fought since World War II – America’s Forever War.
Inspired by President Eisenhower’s prophetic warning against the Military Industrial Complex, Black Label Artistic Director Carl Flink utilizes scientific research and the company’s exhilarating physical-impact technique to place a magnifying glass on the ethical and physical implications of the Endless War; its glorification of military power and violence.
Inviting intentional examination of this perpetual state of aggression and its pervasive role in present-day American society, Battleground demands audience members reflect upon its consequences while seeking empathy for the everyday souls who prosecute and are caught in its midst..
Premiering in October 2024 at a specially designed location built on a farm on the outskirts of Durham, North Carolina, the American Dance Festival commissioned Battleground with additional support from a 2022 MAP Fund grant and the University of Minnesota’s Imagine Fund and Grant-in-Aid programs.

The Moving Cell Project
Year 15
It’s hard to believe but Black Label's pioneering collaboration with biomedical engineer David Odde is in its 15th year. The project is funded in part by the National Cancer Institute and continues to offer bodystorming workshops in various venues from high schools to the Minnesota State Fair. We continue to explore new ways for scientists and artists to conduct substantive research together.
‘LOST IN LIGHT’
We recently had the honor of collaborating with musician Greg LeGette on the visuals to his newest song off the project ‘Humans for a Moment’.
