HERD: BLM in Florida

From Jan. 3-8, 2009 BLM joined the New York City based dance company The Equus Project on a horse ranch outside of Ocala, Florida to continue work on the two company’s ongoing collaborative project called HERD. The project is an exploration of horse herd behavior and the telling lens it provides into human interaction and behavior. A new website for the project is being developed for those interested in more information or following development of the project.

BLM at Mt. Holyoke College

BLM mover Stephanie Laager and I set my 2004 dance piece Lost Lullabies on students at the Mt. Holyoke College dance program from Jan 12-21 to be a presented as part of the program’s upcoming spring concert. The piece will be performed by Mt. Holyoke March 4-7, 2009.

Eddie's A Keeper

At the 4th Annual Sage Awards this past September 2008, BLM mover Eddie Oroyan (performer) and Wreck composer Mary Ellen Childs (music design for Wreck) received Sage Awards. Laura Selle Virtucio was also nominated in the performer category. Congratulations to them all! The Sage awards annually honor multiple facets of the wonderful community of dance in the Twin Cities of Minnesota.

The Woyzeck Project

October 10-18, 2008, Carl joined with master puppeteer and director Michael Sommers and actor/director Luverne Siefert to premiere a unique version of Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck for the University of Minnesota Department of Theatre Arts and Dance Mainstage Season. The piece will be installed in Old Norris Hall, a building slated for demolition on the east bank of the University’s Minneapolis campus.

Department Chair

On July 1, 2008, Carl became the chair of the University of Minnesota department of theatre arts and dance. It will be both an exciting and challenging opportunity.

BLM in Utah

BLM Artistic Associate Emilie Plauche Flink and Carl traveled in our minivan with our three daughters to conduct a summer residency at the Brigham Young University dance department in Provo, UT from July 21 – August 1. Emilie and Carl also set Carl’s piece “A Duet for Wreck” on the department’s student company.

McKnight Artist Fellowship

l was named a recipient of a 2008 McKnight Artist Fellowship for Choreographers, administered by the Southern Theater and funded by the McKnight Foundation. McKnight Fellowships for Choreographers. The fellowship comes with a $25,000 cash award that will help BLM tremendously in the coming year.
